It also sells a wide variety of pre-prepared meals, including Indian curries, Thai green chicken curry, beef lasagne, and a Moroccan tagine all of these just by the use of an Iceland Student Discount. In terms of vegetables, Iceland Foods is well-known for its range of frozen peas, sweetcorn, and mixed vegetables.
Iceland Foods was founded by Malcolm Walker in 1970 when he purchased a small corner shop that had stood empty for six months. The first year of trading saw profits of just £8,000; however, this figure increased to £160,000 the following year. By 1984, there were 22 Iceland stores across the country and annual turnover had reached £200 million. In 1985, a 23rd store opened in Basildon and the company floated on the London Stock Exchange as "Icengro". In 1986 it raised further capital to create a chain of over 50 stores before selling 41% of the business to venture capitalists Baugur Group from Iceland for £ million via their subsidiary FH Invest. In 2001, Baugur Group purchased the remaining 59% of Iceland Foods from the original shareholders, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary.
Iceland Foods does not sell any genetically modified foods and has never done so. It is one of the few supermarkets in the United Kingdom to have this policy and it states that it will not do so in the future unless there is scientific consensus that GM foods are safe for human consumption. Iceland Foods does not sell any organic foods and has never done so. The company believes that there is no nutritional difference between organic and non-organic foods and that the higher price of organic produce means that it is inaccessible to many people. It also believes that organic farming practices are not sustainable in the long term.
Iceland Foods has a policy of reducing the use of plastic packaging as much as possible. It aims to achieve this by using recyclable materials where possible, by reusing materials when possible, and by ensuring that all products are designed for easy-separation recyclability. In addition, it offers a free recycling service for all plastic packaging products bought from its stores.
Iceland Student Discount has a policy of reducing food waste as much as possible. It does this by ensuring that all products are designed for easy-separation recyclability, by offering a free recycling service for all food waste products bought from its stores, by donating food to local charities when possible, and by running an in-store campaign called "Love Food - Hate Waste".
